Kozo Nets

2017 – 24

Kozo and gampi fibers. Cellulose glue, dyes, pigment, metal leaves. ca 60 x 97 cm.

Mulberry bark, like kozo and gampi, can be used in several ways. It can be beaten into short fibers and made into paper, or the long fibers can be used, like here, to build networks. The fibers have natural glue in them, but here it is necessary to add cellulose glue to make them a strong structure.

Sol Invictus

2005

110 x 140 cm Network, linen thread, flax fibres, kozo paper.

Sol Invictus means the invincible Sun; I am trying to catch the suns warmth in the web..
Many cultures, like the Romans, have worshipped the sun, and “Sol” was at times a dominant force in their religion.

Green Blue

2005

Each element 45 cm x 60 cm, various size.

«Green Blue»is a series of nets, with incorporated small natural elements, like twigs, as well as metal and plastic items. This was one of my first attempts at combining tread nets with found objects.

Venus Fasciata

2004

110 x 140 cm Network. Linen thread, flax fibres, found objects.

I have spent much time looking for items on the beaches, and as a child I was a passionate collector of shells.
The sea shell «Venus Fasciata» gave name to this artwork; one of the first where shells and bones were integrated into the net, together with metal rings and plastic capsules. Though environmentalism is an underlaying theme here; a reflection on the relationship between nature and culture, it has also with pure joy and creativity to do!
