G & O

2021

Installation. 400 x 160 x 30 cm

The shelves are made of weather -worn pine wood, and the gables are the remains of a laminate floor.
The baskets and other objects were made through many years, as a break from working with larger artworks. I have used various techniques, such as crocheting, knitting, lacework, resin and paper cast. The materials are everything from hand-spun linen to copper wire and beeswax.
The shelf structure was made by my husband Odd in January 2021, as a tribute to our golden wedding. Due to the pandemic it was impossible to get together with family and friends, so we celebrated by creating this joint artwork: G & O ( Gjertrud & Odd )

Most of these baskets are from the last 10 years. They have various sizes, from diam 20 – 50 cm, and are 20 -100 cm high.

I am trying to push the boundaries of basketry, experimenting with traditional as well as unconventional materials and techniques. I use knitting, crochet, lacemaking, plaiting, winding, paper- and resin cast. The materials are varied as well; roots, kazo fibers, linen and cotton thread, metal wire and carbon thread.
Mostly, my baskets are shown individually, as sculptural baskets. At other times they are used in site-specific installations, or are parts of a permanent artwork, like the G +O shelf.
